It's my belief...

That we all have the need to feel special...

And it's this need...

That can bring out the best in us...

Yet the worst in us...

This need created...

The velvet rope...

Released in 1997 and self proclaimed as Janet's most introspective album to date, The Velvet Rope brought us closer to Janet than we'd ever imagined.  At the time if it's conception and ultimate completion Janet was in a healing process of sorts.  Battling depression Janet chose not to shy away from the goings on in her personal life.  She instead took advantage of the ultimate therapy, putting her raw emotions into words and actually putting them to song.  Although it was not of her most successful albums, it was one of my personal favorites.  The most memorable song on the album for many is "Together Again" which was the only number one single from the release.  In my opinion, Virgin Records abandoned the project and did give it the attention it deserved.  A tour of the same name was highly successful.  Boasting it's highest ratings ever The Velvet Rope Tour, live from New York City's Madison Square Garden, was Janet's first project for HBO.  The concert is currently available on dvd and home video.
